Natural language web searches, ProLog and my constant lateness

During the last three months I studied logical programming, focusing on ProLog, and thought that it could be interesting to use its powerful deductive capabilities to improve web searches, making them more logical and natural.

I googled a bit and discovered that, as always, there's someone who's developing in that direction: Powerlabs is a San Francisco company, working on a search engine based on natural language processing; they're trying to push web searches further the "simple" matching of keywords.

Actually, I don't have any idea of the languages and algorythms they're using (I just read they're seeking RoR programmers for the front-end... GOOD!), but the idea is quite similar. Are they gonna be next Google?

Skype phone 3, offerte e tutto il resto

Lo skype phone è un simpatico apparecchio della AMOI Electronics che - oltre a fungere da videofonino generico - fa ovviamente anche da client skype.

3 ha lanciato nelle scorse settimane un'offerta utilizzando il classico stile italiota del "ti dico mezze verità", con tanto di tirata d'orecchi delle associazioni dei consumatori e figura barbina sui blog.


Ebbene, in questi giorni ho provato a indagare anch'io per scoprire che:

• l'offerta, sul sito, è incompleta (copre solo i comodato d'uso, mentre l'acquisto del terminale è paventato ma non affrontato nella fattispecie)
• per abbonamenti e ricaricabili non sono chiariti dettagli importanti riguardo le "sanzioni" applicate a chi non ricarica di mese in mese (cosa non irrilevante da sapere)
• per chi acquista il cellulare, non è chiaro sul sito se è necessaria la ricarica mensile e di quale entità
  
• non è descritto alcun vantaggio per chi approfitta della number portability, mentre esiste una precisa offerta al riguardo (imboscata da un'altra parte del sito)
  
• nessun negozio fisico ha ricevuto informazioni precise, con l'estrema conseguenza che lo stesso rivenditore, interrogato due volte, è riuscito a darmi risposte contrastanti.

Esasperato dalle incongruenze, mi sono rivolto a un centro Tre ufficiale ed ecco il risultato:

Alla fine l'ho acquistato, a 99€, scegliendo la tariffa Super0, perchè intendo mantenere il numero Vodafone sul Qtek9090 per le mie chiamate standard.

Come sempre, mi piacerebbe fare quattro chiacchiere coi programmatori del firmware (peraltro alla sua 21ma incarnazione, all'anima del betatesting!!) visto che ci sono un paio di dettagli assolutamente inspiegabili (perché PRIMA avvisare di un messaggio e poi scaricarlo in background???) e l'usabilità alle volte fa acqua (perché fare la sequenza di blocco tastiera, nemmeno spiegata sul manuale, solo dalla schermata principale???).

A parte questo, ho già ammortizzato con la mia leonessa i costi, e sono più che soddisfatto.

Good news is that there's still hope in this old, tired and stinky country.

Bad news is that our politicians raised the usual, transversal choir of disapproval. Even our prime minister Prodi defends such a criminal that stomped on justice even to help Mafia.

"Monkey" business

I watched and desired it for years, too expensive to justify a sudden purchase but way too cool to not remain a latent "monkey".

Once I found it on eBay at 60 euros -everything included- I did not resist.

What can I say: it's even more accurate than I expected. Well, you have to tweak yourself a bit (eg.: raise fingers after "pression", slow down typing rate, check light conditions), but anyway it works really good.

Programmin' with OpenLISP on my Qtek 9090 will be much funnier now!

Microsoft programmers use to smoke toners

I bought a used notebook.

A notebook, because I don't intend to bring my desktop computer on live stage.
Used, because new ones don't have the IEEE 1284 port the glove requires.

So, it's a Mitac MiNote 8575. Not a huge PC, but more than enough for my requirements.

Yesterday night I tried to reinstall Windows XP professional SP1, in order to have the cleanest situation possibile. I failed 'cause installation hangs up. No explanation, just a BSOD.

SO, I tried to install Windows XP professional first edition. I failed again, installation hangs up because setup can't read CD. Ok, it always worked but... it's fine.

This morning I came into office an tried a new, immaculate Windows XP professional SP1 a CD. This time it seems to work: setup copied files required for installation (lol), restarts machine and... no way: can't find "onlygodknows.cab" file. Tried several times and finally surrendered.

Ok, let's try to connect a USB drive... read from this. Let's brows... hey, where the hell is the browse button? THERE ISN'T! Are you kidding?!?

Ok, fine, I suppose if it's trying to read it from D:\i386, maybe it could search it in E:\i386.
And it does.
For one second.

Here it comes "anotherdamnedfile.cab", that Windows' setup cannot find. You stupid setup, why don't you search it in the position I just suggested you?

I had to reply "E:\i386" hundred times to make it work. Stunning.

Don't know what kind of drugs Microsoft's programmers and betatesters use to smoke, but I suggest everybody to keep away from them.
